How to Get to Budongo Forest Reserve
Budongo Forest Reserve is one of Uganda’s most prominent tropical rainforests situated in the North Western part of the country close to Murchison Falls National Park. The forest is known for chimpanzee trekking, bird watching, nature walks and mahogany trees. Because of its location near to major tourist destinations, the Forest is easily accessed by road and air from Kampala, Entebbe and other parts of Uganda.
Budongo Forest reserve can be accessed by use of Road and Air which are preferred by the travelers on safari in Uganda.
By Road
Road transport is the most common and affordable way of reaching Budongo Forest Reserve. The forest lies approximately 230 to 260 kilometers from Kampala, depending on the route used and the journey usually takes between 4 and 6 hours.
The main route starts from Kampala through Luweero, Nakasongola and Masindi town before reaching Budongo Forest. Travelers use the Kampala–Gulu Highway, which is fully tarmacked for most of the journey.
After reaching Masindi town, visitors continue toward Kichumbanyobo Gate, the southern entrance to Murchison Falls National Park, and then proceed to Budongo Forest.
The journey follows this route:
Kampala → Luweero → Nakasongola → Masindi → Kichumbanyobo Gate → Budongo Forest
From Masindi town to Budongo Forest is about 30 to 40 kilometers, depending on the entry point. The final section includes murram roads, which can become slippery during rainy seasons. Because of this, four-wheel-drive vehicles are highly recommended, especially between March–May and September–November.
Access Points into Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest has two major tourism access points:
Kaniyo Pabidi
This is the most popular entrance for chimpanzee trekking and nature walks. It is located along the Masindi–Paraa road within Murchison Falls Conservation Area. Most tourists visiting Murchison Falls National Park combine their safari with activities at Kaniyo Pabidi.
Busingiro Ecotourism Site
Located on the southern side of the forest near Nyabyeya, Busingiro is famous for bird watching and the Royal Mile trail. It is quieter and ideal for researchers and bird lovers.
Traveling by Air
For tourists who prefer faster and more comfortable transport, domestic charter flights are available from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to airstrips near Murchison Falls National Park.

The nearest airstrips to Budongo Forest include:

Flights take about one hour from Entebbe. After landing, visitors continue by road to Budongo Forest, which may take another 1 to 2 hours depending on the airstrip used.
This option is commonly used by luxury tourists and international visitors who want to reduce travel time.
Best Time to Travel
Budongo Forest can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons are considered the best times for travel because roads and forest trails are easier to use.

About Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest Reserve is a tropical rainforest known for chimpanzee research, conservation, and ecotourism.
Located in northwestern Uganda close to Murchison Falls National Park with mahogany trees, big chimpanzee population, birdlife.
Budongo has five main forest-types: colonizing, mixed, Cynometra, Cynometra-mixed and swamp-forest. The majority of the reserve is covered by tropical high-forest communities. Medium-altitude semi-deciduous Cynometra-Celtis forest covers about half of the site and Combretum savanna is widespread in drier areas.
The vegetation of Budongo Forest Reserve includes moist, medium-altitude, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest. This makes some trees shed their leaves during the dry season, while many remain green throughout the year.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is very exceptional to do as visitors transfer through the tropical rainforest with trained guides searching for the habituated chimpanzees in the green forest. Trekking the chimpanzees in the forest takes place at Kaniyo Pabidi, a section of Budongo Forest Reserve situated within Murchison Falls Conservation Area in the North Western part of Uganda. Another chimpanzee research and tourism area is the Sonso/Royal Mile sector.
Chimpanzee Trekking Process in the Reserve
Chimp trekking is usually done twice daily i.e Morning session: around 7:00–8:00 am, Afternoon session: around 2:00–3:00 pm.
Budongo Forest reserve is home to more than 600 chimpanzees with many habituated communities available for tourism and research. Sightings are usually very successful often above 80%.
