Attractions at Budongo Forest Reserve offer remarkable safari encounters as you explore wildlife, rainforest scenery and birding. The reserve is situated close to Murchison falls national park in the North West of Uganda.
Attractions to watch in the reserve
While at the reserve, you can watch the Chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat. Budongo forest is prominent for inhabiting the wild chimpanzees, at Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro. Visitors can follow guided forest trails to observe the chimpanzees feeding, grooming and communicating in their natural habitat. There about 600–800 chimpanzees that stay in the green forest.
You can also view the royal Mile which is Budongo’s most famous trail that passes through towering mahogany trees and one of the best birdwatching locations in East Africa. It is exceptional for photographers and nature lovers.
Bird species
While in the reserve, you can also watch many species of birds i.e 280–360 bird species have been recorded. The bird species you watch in the forest reserve are African dwarf kingfisher, Chocolate-backed kingfisher, Nahan’s francolin, Yellow-footed flycatcher, White-thighed hornbill, Green-breasted pitta. Rare species can be watched along the Royal Mile.
Giant mahogany forest
While in Budongo Forest reserve, you can view some of East Africa’s largest mahogany trees with some specimens reaching extraordinary heights. Walking below the dense rainforest canopy is also an attraction.
Guided nature walks
While in the forest reserve, you enjoy guided nature walks watching animal species like the Black-and-white colobus monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Grey-cheeked mangabeys, Olive baboons, Bushbucks and duikers, Butterflies and unique forest plants.

About Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest Reserve is a tropical rainforest known for chimpanzee research, conservation, and ecotourism.
Located in northwestern Uganda close to Murchison Falls National Park with mahogany trees, big chimpanzee population, birdlife.
Budongo has five main forest-types: colonizing, mixed, Cynometra, Cynometra-mixed and swamp-forest. The majority of the reserve is covered by tropical high-forest communities. Medium-altitude semi-deciduous Cynometra-Celtis forest covers about half of the site and Combretum savanna is widespread in drier areas.
The vegetation of Budongo Forest Reserve includes moist, medium-altitude, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest. This makes some trees shed their leaves during the dry season, while many remain green throughout the year.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is very exceptional to do as visitors transfer through the tropical rainforest with trained guides searching for the habituated chimpanzees in the green forest. Trekking the chimpanzees in the forest takes place at Kaniyo Pabidi, a section of Budongo Forest Reserve situated within Murchison Falls Conservation Area in the North Western part of Uganda. Another chimpanzee research and tourism area is the Sonso/Royal Mile sector.
Chimpanzee Trekking Process in the Reserve
Chimp trekking is usually done twice daily i.e Morning session: around 7:00–8:00 am, Afternoon session: around 2:00–3:00 pm.
Budongo Forest reserve is home to more than 600 chimpanzees with many habituated communities available for tourism and research. Sightings are usually very successful often above 80%.
