Budongo Forest Reserve is located in the North Western Uganda mainly Masindi District close to Murchison Falls National Park. The forest lies approximately 3 to 4 hours by road from Kampala and one of the most accessible tropical rainforests in the country. It is situated on the escarpment northeast of Lake Albert forming part of the greater Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
Geographically, Budongo Forest is positioned between latitudes 1°37’ North and 2°03’ North and longitudes 31°22’ East and 31°46’ East. The reserve lies at an average altitude of about 1,100 meters above sea level. The land slopes gently from southeast to northwest with many rivers such as the Sonso, Waisoke, Kamirambwa and Siba flowing through the forest toward the Albertine Rift Valley.
Budongo Forest Reserve covers an area of about 825 square kilometers making it one of the largest natural reserve forests with moist, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest under the management of the National Forestry Authority (NFA). In the reserve is rich biodiversity i.e chimpanzees, mahogany trees, bird species, butterflies and other wildlife species.
Near the forest are local communities, agricultural land and trading centers i.e Masindi and Nyabyeya with Lake Albert which lies to the West. Budongo Forest Reserve offers chimpanzee trekking, bird watching, guided nature walks and ecological research.
The Forest Reserve consists of tropical climate with rainfall ranging from 1,200 mm to 2,200 mm annually. The wet seasons usually occur from March to May and from September to November, while the dry season extends from December to February. Temperatures generally range between 19°C and 32°C throughout the year.

Budongo has five main forest-types: colonizing, mixed, Cynometra, Cynometra-mixed and swamp-forest. The majority of the reserve is covered by tropical high-forest communities. Medium-altitude semi-deciduous Cynometra-Celtis forest covers about half of the site and Combretum savanna is widespread in drier areas.
The vegetation of Budongo Forest Reserve includes moist, medium-altitude, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest. This makes some trees shed their leaves during the dry season, while many remain green throughout the year.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is very exceptional to do as visitors transfer through the tropical rainforest with trained guides searching for the habituated chimpanzees in the green forest. Trekking the chimpanzees in the forest takes place at Kaniyo Pabidi, a section of Budongo Forest Reserve situated within Murchison Falls Conservation Area in the North Western part of Uganda. Another chimpanzee research and tourism area is the Sonso/Royal Mile sector.
Chimpanzee Trekking Process in the Reserve
Chimp trekking is usually done twice daily i.e Morning session: around 7:00–8:00 am, Afternoon session: around 2:00–3:00 pm.
Budongo Forest reserve is home to more than 600 chimpanzees with many habituated communities available for tourism and research. Sightings are usually very successful often above 80%.
