Budongo Forest Reserve is among Uganda’s largest and most essential tropical rainforests found in the North Western part of Uganda close to the famous Murchison Falls National Park. The Reserve covers an area of about 825 square kilometers with rich biodiversity including chimpanzees, bird species, butterflies and vast mahogany trees.
The forest reserve is about 3–4 hours drive by road from Kampala and close to Masindi town. It forms part of the larger Murchison Falls conservation area and is seated close to Lake Albert.
Wildlife species in the forest reserve
The forest reserve is known to inhabit the chimpanzees as there are about 600–800 individuals staying in the forest vegetation. Some chimpanzee groups are habituated hence visitors can track them safely with guides. In the reserve are other wildlife species i.e Black-and-white colobus monkeys, Olive baboons, Blue monkeys, Grey-cheeked mangabeys, Forest elephants, Buffaloes, Many reptiles and amphibians.
There are also many bird species i.e more than 360 bird species which include; Nahan’s francolin/partridge, White-thighed hornbill, African pied hornbill, Green-breasted pitta. There are also more than 465 tree species, hundreds of butterfly and moth species.

About Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest Reserve is a tropical rainforest known for chimpanzee research, conservation, and ecotourism.

Budongo has five main forest-types: colonizing, mixed, Cynometra, Cynometra-mixed and swamp-forest. The majority of the reserve is covered by tropical high-forest communities. Medium-altitude semi-deciduous Cynometra-Celtis forest covers about half of the site and Combretum savanna is widespread in drier areas.
The vegetation of Budongo Forest Reserve includes moist, medium-altitude, semi-deciduous tropical rainforest. This makes some trees shed their leaves during the dry season, while many remain green throughout the year.

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is very exceptional to do as visitors transfer through the tropical rainforest with trained guides searching for the habituated chimpanzees in the green forest. Trekking the chimpanzees in the forest takes place at Kaniyo Pabidi, a section of Budongo Forest Reserve situated within Murchison Falls Conservation Area in the North Western part of Uganda. Chimpanzee Trekking Process in the Reserve
Chimp trekking is usually done twice daily i.e Morning session: around 7:00–8:00 am, Afternoon session: around 2:00–3:00 pm.
Budongo Forest reserve is home to more than 600 chimpanzees with many habituated communities available for tourism and research. Sightings are usually very successful often above 80%.
